Laying a Ifew Cable.
o (Per Press Association.) Wellington, This Day. : The Terranoro returned to port this morning, and reports having completed s laying the new single core cable between i White's Bay (South Island) and Oterangi (North Island) on Monday afternoon. The work of replacing No. 4 cable between White's and Lyell Bays was ■ then begun and finished at' 3 o'clock . yesterday afternoon. About three-quar-t ers of a mile of cable was cut out of the | latter and a new piece spliced in. With the increased communication the department will be able to cope with the work without the aid of the Wheatstone automatic instrument, which need only ■ be used when there is an unusual pressure of work.
