Wreck of the Barque Halcione.

THE VESSEL GONE TO PIECES. (Per Press Association). Wellington, January 9. As the Graf ton was passing the wreck this afternoon the foremast was seen to topple over into the sea. At 3.35 word was received that only one mast was standing, that fishermen were picking up cargo, and that tbe hull was rapidly going to pieces. A party of police was sent to look after the salvage. At 10 o'clock to-night it was reported from the signal station at the Heads that the Halcione had gone completely to pieces and the sea in the vicinity of the Heads was strewn thick with wreckage and cargo. A number of laborers are securing the cargo as it comes ashore. The insurances on the cargo, so far as can be ascertained, are : — Victoria, .£I6OO ; South British, £1200 ; National, £1000 ; China Traders, £500 ; Commercial Union, £50. This Day. The Halcione has disappeared altogether. The heavy grinding on the reef apparently has torn the bottom out of her. All yesterday afternoon a considable quantity of cargo was drifting about between Barrett's Reef and the Western Ledge. To-day tbe wiud changed, and, being off shore, what cargo is afloat is being driven seawards. )
