Volunteer Items.
♦ The following Volunteer Corps are 1 formed into a Mounted Rifle Batallion under the description of •• The Wellington Mounted Rifle Volunteers " :—Alexandra Cavalry, Wairoa Mounted Rifles, Hawera Mounted Rifles, and Manawatu Rifles. Major J. R. Somerville is appointed Major of the batallion, and Adjutant H. A. Lomax Adjutant. In consequence of these appointments Somerville and Lomax have been removed from the unattached active list, as also has Major Wood, who was appointed to the Wellington Infantry Batallion. The Manchester Rifles paraded last night for inspection and drill. All the officers and a tolerable muster of noncommissioned officers and men were present. Sergt.-Major Macmillan drilled the company, and good progress was made. At the conclusion of the parade Captain Kirton said there were two or three members who were either unwilling or unable to attend parades, and these would be dismissed at the end of the volunteer year and fined to the fullest extent.
