The Holiday Death-Roll.
The holiday rejoicings leave the inevitable sad record. The death-roll has been large. In the midst of the holiday festivities four men died of starvation in various parts of Australia, and one from thirst, all the deaths, with the exception of that of the victim from thirst occurring close to the large centres of population. Fatalities were numerous. One man was decapitated by a train, a woman and a lad met their deaths by burning, and a farm hand lost bis life by being dragged into a threshing machine. There were seven suicides, one of a boy of 18. Two peculiar deaths occurred in Victoria and Western Australia. An old lady was shot dead by a guest, who was spending a holiday at her place, and fired at what he took to be bird moving in a bush. He was horrified to find he had shot his hostess. At Perth a boy sleeping under a busb made a movement which a man took to be that of a snake, and the boy was shot dead.
