Violent Thunderstorm.
TELEGRAPHIC COMMUNICATION INTERRUPTED. Last night, about 9 o'clock, flashes of j lightning in the South indicated the ap- ■ proach of a thunderstorm. Gradually the flashes increased in intensity, nntil the whole Southern sky was brilliantly lit up as with the Aurora Australis. Between 11 and 12 o'clock the storm broke over Feilding. The thunder crashes were almost deafening, while the sheet and forked lightning rendered everything as distinct as day. The rain fell in torrents while a furious gale raged from the northward. We have not heard of any damage, but several ladies were so overcome with fear that they fainted, and, in some instances, went into hysterics. The storm water found its way into several shops in town, but no serious damage was done. Mr S. Goodbehere informs us that the rainfall last night was 2 07 inches. This morning's Mercnry says : — One of the most severe storms that has visited this district was experienced in Marton last evening, the result of the electric disturbance being that the wires were blocked. The thunder and lightning were accompanied by a heavy downpour of rain. Telegraphic communication with the south is interrupted.
