Feilding Athletic Sports.
The twentieth annual meeting of the popular Feilding Athletic Sports Club was held on the Oval yesterday, when the attendance was larger than on any previous occasion, there being at the lowest estimate 2500 persons present. About £103 was taken at the outside gate in cash, but it must be remembered that although this amount is .£2 less than last year members have been admitted free and supplied with ladies' tickets, also, vehicles were admitted free. At the lawn gate £54 6s was taken in cash, or £3 more than last year. From this it will be seen that the popularity or these sports continues to increase. The several events were well competed for and in the majority the racing was very exciting, the finishes being remarkably close, a high compliment to the handicapper, Mr T. M. Oopeland. The three bicycle races proved to be very interesting, and attracted a large number of competitors, although the winners secured easy victories. Many cyclists were disappointed with Boyd (of Christchurch), but there can be no doubt he was at a disadvantage at having to ride on a grass track without being banked-up at the corners, when he has been used to riding on very " fast " tracks. Cattanach, who won the five aud three mile events, is a fine rider, and should, in tbe near iutuie, prove to be one of the fastest riders in New Zealand. Messrs A. H. Way and Essex succeeded very well indeed in the most difficult task of handicapping tbe bicycle events. The events were got off well up to time, the last being decided before 5.30 in the afternoon, and the Committee are to be complimented for general good management. Mr Walter A. L. Bailey acted as director of sports, on which position a considerable amount of tbe success of the meeting depends. It is needless to say that Mr Bailey carried oat bis onerous duties with promptness, firmness, and courtesy. He was ably assisted by the Committee, consisting of Messrs B. Gosling, A. C. Matheson, W. Reid, E. Goodbehere, G. Saywell, E. H. Fisher, F. Y. Lethbridge, H. Woolven, G. Lethbridge, G. Kirton, R. H. Whisker, W. G. Haybittle, T. H. James. Messrs Jas Scott and 6. W. Fowles acted as time-keepers, and Mr W. H- Hartgill, the starter par excellence, was in his old position with Mr P. Thomson as an assistant and apt pupil. Mr H. L. Sherwill, the courteous secretary, was kept very busy all day and the competitors were not slow to recognise the advantages of the systematic manner in which the duties appertaining to the offices were conducted. Valuable assistance was rendered him by the treasurer, Mr A. R. Allan. Daring the day the Feilding Brass Band, under the conductorship of Mr R. F. Haybittle, played a number of selections. Mr J. Smith had charge of the refreshment stalls and did a very fair business.
