The Venezuelan Difficulty.
UNIVERSAL PRAYERS FOR PEACE. PRESIDENT CLEVELAND CONDEMNED. (Per Presa Association.) New York, Dec. 23. A feature of the panic on the New York Exchange was the heavy sales of stock by German holders. The professors of the Harvard University petitioned Congress for the maintenance of peace. Universal prayers for peace were offered in churches throughout the United States. The President's message is generally denounced as the crime of the century. The New York World publishes a powerful indictment against President Cleveland. The Republican members of the Committee of Ways and Means are in favour of the imposition of a duty on wool, which, with the issue of low-priced bonds payable in gold, it is urged, would meet the present financial crisis. It is doubtful whether such a proposal, would pass the Senate. Vienna, Dec. 22. A panic occurred on the Vienna Stock Exchange, resulting in enormous losses and scores of failures. Rothschilds intervened, and bought 50,000 shares. London, December 23. The Berlin and "Vienna Press continue to support England's attitude. The Spanish statesmen suggest an alliance with England in the event of war.
