It is estimated that a sum of between LI3O and Ll4O was taken at the circus performance last night at Mar ton. The " Tuis" will repeat thier Grand Variety Entertainment in the Assembly Booms on Boxing night. This is a really good show, and is the only instance we have ever known where the corner men (in the first part of the programme) fire off only original jokes and fun, witty, and amusing. The singing and music are good, and the whole show is really deserving of the warmest patronage. On Thursday last a young man named John Bathe pluckily stopped a pair of runaway horses attached to a brake on the Eimbolton road near Birmingham. The storeman in charge having gone into a settlers' house and left his horses standing on the road they took fright and bolted. Mr Bathe met them and galloped after them until he came up with them, when he jumped off his horse and caught hold of the reins, bringing the frightened animals to a standstill, thus preventing a possible smash-up. The committee of the Feilding Athletic Club met in Mr Sherwill's office last evening. There was a fair attendance, and Mr E. Goodbehere occupied the chair. The Secretary reported that he had ordered a new cover for the band stand at a cost of £3. It was decided that the man selling tickets for the lawn should occupy a box similar to the one at the outside gates, and the Secretary was instructed to get one made. It was resolved that all members of the Committee meet on the Oval at 3 p.m on Xmas Day to mark out distances. Periodicals such as the Illustrated London News and Sketch are offered at 6d each and those containing lighter literature at Id. The stock of fancy and useful goods suitable for Christmas presents is varied and purchasers will have no difficulty in making a selection. Also, the designs in Christmas cards are very beautiful. Mr Ward's recommendation to have the question of the 200,000 acres of native lands in connection with the New Flymouth Harbor Board debentures referred to arbitration has been dealt with by Cabinet. Ministers do not see their way to concur in the suggestion, but as a solution of the difficulty they reply that they shall be able to assist the Board in converting or in purchasing brck its debentures, and if necessary to introduce legislation to give effect to these proposals. Debenture holders could not complain as to their security ocder these circumstances, aad if converted the ratepayers will get the benefit of the 2 per cent of difference in the rate of interest now paid and that payable on the debentures after conversion. — N.Z.
