An English mail arrived this morning. Several letters to the editor are unavoidably held over. The Feilding State School broke up to-day for the Christmas holidays. Train services for Christmas holidays and Christmas Sports are advertised today. Messrs Bartholomew Bros, have for sale 50,000 feet of seasoned white pine at rates quoted in their advertisement. The annual meeting of ratepayers of the Pohangina County will be held tomorrow at eleven o'clock at the County office. F. Hunt won the ten-mile road race at Marton from scratch iv 32min 50sec, the first five miles being traversed in 16min osec. The local tennis courts will be formally opened to.iuorrow afternoon, when it is expected there will be a large attendance of members. Mr W. Freeman, of the Manawatu railway dining car, is the successful tenderer for the refreshment rooms on the Palmerston North railway station. Duncan Poole, 12 years old. attending the Bunnythorpe school, had one of his legs broken yesterday while wrestling with another boy. He was taken in to the Palmerston hospital. At Hunterville on Wednesday Mr John Stevens, M.H.R., addressed his constituents in the Argyle Hall, and received a vote of thanks, also one of renewed confidence in him as member for Rangitikei. The concert and presentation of prizes to children attending the Feilding school will take place in the Assembly Rooms this evening. The concert will commence at 7.30 sharp. For the Xmas holidays Messrs Spence and Spence offer special value in kid gloves, aprons, blouses, straw hats, etc. The Bon Marche will be found fully stocked with all the little necessaries in drapery wanted before the holidays. We hear that trouble is likely to occur during this week in connection with the tollgates in the Taranaki Connty. The Maoris assert that they will not pay the toll, and a force of police is to be placed at one of the gates to enforce payment. — Hawera Star. The cricket match arranged between the first elevens of Ashurst and Pohangina took place at Pohangina on Wednesday afternoon last, and resulted in a draw in favor of Ashurst. When the stumps were drawn the scores stood — Pohangina, first innings, 45 runs ,* Ashurst, 62 runs ; in the second innings Pohangina had six wickets down for 20 runs. Orchids 2000 ft above the sea are somewhat of a novelty in New Zealand, in fact it is not recorded that any have been found in such a situation until one day last week, when one of the guests at Hood's Jollies Pass Hotel at Hanmer came upon them. The flower is a green aud white variety, and bears in shape a certain resemblance to tbe beak of a parrot. Mr P. W. Corby has sold his lease of the Empire Hotel to Messrs J. Barrett and Palmer, of Wellington, who took possession to-day. The furniture and stock were valued by Mr P. Zohrab for the purchasers and W. Evenson (of Cheltenham) for the vendor. During the time he has been in possession of the Empire Hotel (about six months) Mr Corby has made many friends in Feilding who will be pleased to hear of his success in whatever part of the colony he may go to reside in. ' Writing of Fitzgerald's Circus, which will play in Feilding to-morrow (Saturday) evening, an exchange says: — " Much had been said and written concerning tbe exhibition, and the public went expecting something out of tbe ordinary. They were not disappointed, if tbe applause that was lavished on the performers can be taken as a criterion. In these days it takes a good deal to arouse , the amusement-loving public, but Messrs Fitzgerald can fairly claim to having given their patrons something to enthuse over. The programme — a lengthy one— contained many acts of a very wonderful and sensational chaiac* ter. '
