The Feilding Star, Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. MONDAY, DECEMBER 9, 1895. THAT KICK.
A considerable sensation bas been created in the newspaper press of the colony by that most unhappy phrase the New Zealand Times used wheu commenting on the speech made by Mr H. D. Bell to his Wellington constituents, and the sensation in the Empire city particularly is described as " immense." A correspondent of the Napier Telegraph from thence wrote, under date of the 4th instant, " Only one kick from Mr Seddon and the independence of members vanishes. Had an Opposition paper suggested such a thing, it would I have been held up to scorn as brutal, undignified, and malicious. It would be interesting to know what the kicked ones think of themselves, and the estimation they are held in by their leaders. Mr Seddon " only required to make one kick," and behold 1 a minority is at once converted into the old victorious majority. Surely the bread earned by depeudeace such as this mast be bitter, and the £20 per month dearly earned at such a sacrifice of manhood ! The worst the Opposition ever said of those followers was that they were " dumb dogs," and that the Premier's whip would bring them to heel. But a kick! A may whip his dog, and kick a cur."
