The Feilding Star, Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 6, 1895. THE BOROUGH ELECTION.
In fairness to the ratepayers we certainly would urge upon the two candidates for municipal honors the necessity which exists for their taking the earliest opportunity possible of letting the electors know their views on Borough affairs? Both are estimable men in private life, and useful citizens, but hitherto neither of them bas taken either an active or a prominent part in public affairs. What we, and others, would like to know is what their opinions are on the subjects of. lighting the town either by gas or electricity, water supply and drainage, and whether or not the rates can or cannot be reduced in any degree. In fact we would like to know why one candi- | date should be preferred to the other. lAs it is now — unless they take the > trouble to address the burgesses and state their views and opinions on the subjects named — tbe ratepayers will have to vote merely on the personal qualities of the candidates, and not on their respective capabilities to serve as Councillors. We are aware that several ratepayers have intimated they will not exercise their franchise at all unless some reason is given them for so doing, and we certainly think under the circumstances they are not unjustified in their intended inactivity.
