The New Zealand Trust and Loan Company declare a dividend of 5 per cent. Jabez Balfour has been convicted on a charge of dividing -wi-fcti Wrigfot, a. contractor, commission on the construction of the Whitehall Court. Sentence was deferred until to-morrow. It is expected that the British Budget will show a surplus of six millions. Great Britain undertakes the construction of a railway of 260 miles from Mandalay to Kunlon, in order to prevent the French monopoly of Yunnan. The Ashantee King Prempeh still maintains a defiant attitude. The princes are friedely disposed towards the British, and have provided 10,000 carriers to as- ( sist the British forces in proceeding against the King. Paris, Nov. 27. Obituary — Alexandre Dumas, novelist and dramatic writer ; aged 71. Death was due to abscess on the brain. General Saussier, the military Governor of Pariis, is resiguing his position owing to disputes with M. Cavignac.
