An Experiment with Shropshire Sheep.
(Per Press Association.) Adelaide, Nov, 26, Mr Kalli, of Werocata station, is making some interesting experiments with Shropshire sheep with a view of testing theirworth for mutton purposes. A lot of 50 Shropshire wethers, which were being sent to England alive, were selected from a flock lambed in June, 1394. The best of the selection turned the scale 1701bs and the worst at 1321bs live weight, the whole 50 being calculated to average close upon 1601bs. The sheep were entirely fed on grass and no extra care taken with them. Ten from the same flock were sold in the Adelaide market, and brought from 8s to 9s, while the best price obtained for Merino wethers was 6s 6d. It is claimed that the experiment has proved that the Shropshire cross give maturity in 18 months, while it takes three years to mature Merinos for mutton purposos.
