GAMBLING.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAB. Sir, — That gambling is one of the greatest curses from which New Zealand suffers most people are agreed, and such being so the gambling spirit ought to be checked by those placed in authority. Last Friday a case was tried which proved tbat gambling had taken place, hence the dispute over payment of the gambling debt. Then in Friday night's Star we were informed that a majority of the Councillors approved of the Mayor's suggestion to invite the close on Friday afternoon— race day. It is to be deeply regretted that the Council should use it official position to encourage racing and at the same time the gambling connected with it. It is to be hoped that the shopkeepers will not accept the invitation, but remain open as a protest. I am, etc., Citizen.
