■ ' ♦ i FIVE-MILE CHAMPIONSHIP. ZIMMERMAN DEFEATED. (Per Press Association.) Sydney, Nov. 23. At the Cycling Carnival the weather was threatening, and a light shower or two fell. The attendance was even larger than last Saturday. Zimmerman was taken ill on Friday night, and the doctor ordered hioa not to ride, yet he persisted in assisting at the meeting, but had to retire after covering three laps in the championship, wh.ch was a great disappointment to the public. The League, in recognition of Zimmerman's pluck, gave him £100 extra as a share of the enormous financial success of the meeting, and also donated £25 toPorta, the Italian rider, who had the misfortune to break his arm. A similar sum was given to Martin, the American, in recognition of his fine display in the Metropolitan Race. The following are the results : — Five-mile Championship. Parsons (V) 1, Lewis (V) 2, Iredale (V) 3. Thirteen started. Lewis led to the last lap, when Parsons came with a great rush and won by a dozen yards. Time, 12min 16 l-sth Beconds. The League Cup. — Poole (V), 70yds, 1 ; Moore (Newcastle), 65vds, 2 ; Harkins (Sydney), 60yds, 3. Won easily. Time, lmin 8 2- sth sees. Metropolitan Handicap. — Meadham (Sydney), 65yds. 1 ; Minnes, 20yds, 2 - Martin (America), scratch, 3 ; Payne, 25yds, 4. A magnificent finish, not a yard separating the four. Time, 2min 21 l-slh seconds. Three-mile Open Handicap. — Meadham 1. Time, 7min 42 3 10th sees. At the paying over of the prize-money Zimmerman stated that his half-mile win last Saturday was the hardest race he had ever run.
