The Midland Railway.

Writes the Wellington correspondent of the Auckland Herald : — It has been stated that the Midland Railway Company intends to claim from the colony damages to the extent of a million and a-half. W T hen the Court meets one of the first demands which the Government counsel will make will be to be supplied with full particulars of the company's claim, and if these particulars disclose anything for which the Government are not prepared an adjournment will be applied for to enable the Government to meet the points. It is almost certain that the main ground upon which the company will as|fork damages will be with reference to the taking of the mining reserves. All the principal parties in the case are now in Wellington, except Sir Robert Stout, the leading counsel for the Government, , who will be here by Monday or Tuesday. As is well known, Sir R. Stout accepted a brief on behalf of the Government, but he has declined to receive any fee for his services. This is regarded by the lawyers as unprofessional, but it is thought perhaps to be the right course for Sir Robert to take, considering his political position. (Per Press Association). Wellington, Novr. 22. Sir Robert Stout will lead the case for the Crown in the arbitration proceedings. Mr Gully and Mr Stringer appear with him. Mr Hutchison (Wellington), Mr Cooper (Auckland), and Mr Jones (Greymonth) are counsel for the Bail way Com pany. The proceedings are expected to last at least three months, possibly longer.
