JERSEY CATTLE.

♦ • For several years Jersey cattle have beea sJowly but surely growipg into, favcr anioug daitfy farmers who now almost to a man admit their great superi ority as milkers and butter producers, both as regards quantity and quality. The greatest attention has been given by breeders to keep the breed pure, and

the difficulty has been to get new strains. That difficulty has now, we may say, been removed by the shipment of Jersey cattle which arrived in Wellington by the lonic from London a few days ago. We are informed by the Post it comprises five cows, a bull and four calves, purchased by Mr F. Massey, of Warrington, from Sir Gilbert Greenall, of Walton Hall, Cheshire. Mr Massey, who came out as a passenger by the vessel is sending two of the cows to his son. The rest were bought for Mr F. A. White, the well-known Auckland mining company manager, who is at present in England. Unfortunately, one of the cows valued at £150, died shortly before reaching Capetown. The others, upon which a value of .£IOOO is placed have arrived in fairly good condition, notwithstanding the very rough weather encountered on the passage. Seyeral of the animals have taken principal honors at the leading shows in England. Mr Massey was offered 200 guineas for the bull by a fellow-passenger who came out to Capetown, but the offer was declined. The money value of these cattle is very great, but the results will far more than compensate for their cost, and the trouble of bringing them to the colony.
