Another Sensational Tragedy.
HORRIBLE MURDERS BI A BANK MANAGER. SUICIDE OF THE MURDERER. fPer Press Association.) Melbourne, Nov. 19. Short, manager of tbe branch of tho Commercial Bank at Sale, blew his brains out this morning, having previously shot his wife and cut the throats of his two children. The wife is still living, but is in a precarious state. Later. Short did not display any unusual state of mind prior to the tragedy. The members of the family were devoted to each other. The wife was evidently asleep when she was shot. Two bullets passed clean through her head. The murderer then went into the room where the two children, girls aged four and two yeare, were having breakfast, and attacked tbem with a knife, almost severing their heads from the bodies. Short was a member of a well-known journalistic family in Victoria. One of the brothers is in a responsible position iv the London office of the Melbourne Argus. The following letter was found in deceased's pocket : — *• I have killed my noble wife and innocent children to says them from the effects of my ruin. I intended to blow my own brains out, but I cannot leave tbem alone to face tbe punishment for which I am wholly liable. God help my unfortunate relations." This Day. A peculiar feature of the tragedy is that Mrs Shoat arranged witb her sister to visit her on Monday, but on Saturday the sister received a telegram asking her to postpone it till Tuesday. On Monday she got a note saying her sister would be glad to see her tbat day, and shortly after received another telegram asking her again to postpone the visit. Yesterday morning she received a letter, dated Monday, from Mrs Short, saying on no account must her sister pay a visit, as a terrible blow was about to fall, which would be intensified if sbe were present. The telegrams and note were signed by Mrs Short, but now it is apparent the former were sent by Bhort, and that be premeditated tbe tragedy for several days. So far as is known by the Bank authorities Shorts accounts are all right.
