F. Downes, of WaDganui, and his condition is improving. Tenders are invited for carting timber from the mill of Messrs Lowea and Jarvis, Birmingham, to the Kiwitea for the erection of a bridge. The Babcock test detected a Michigan man in the act of delivering watered milk to a creamery, and the culprit was promptly expelled from the Church to which he belonged. It has been suggested to us that if the Mayor-elect, Mr Walter A. L. Bailey, was to intimrte a movement with the object of having a Horticultural and Agricultural Show in Feilding st Easter time, it would be warmly supported by the residents in town and conntry. Since it has become fashionable for ] woman to wear a collar and necktie, her | superiority over man has been fully demonstrated. You never see a woman with her necktie up at the back or over ears. A brief trial of six months has taught women more in the necktie-wear-ing art than men have learned in 6000 years. I A tbiae-mile cycling race will be held on the Oval to-morrow afternoon, start* ing at 3.30., providing the weather permits. The race is for an handsome album presented by Mr E. Feck, captain of the local Cycling Club, and a pair of cycling shoes presented by Mr H. L. Jackson, and should result in a keen contest, there being ten entries. Montgomery and (he acceptance of a Judgeship by Sir P. Buckley. Mr W. P. Reeves is to take Agent-Generalship, and there is, we believe, a prospect of Sir W. B. Perceval being a candidate for a Christchurch seat. Tbe Gazette notifies that complete spec ifications have been lodged at the Patent office by Mr M. Belk tor an invention for an improved fish-joint for railways and tramways, and that applications have been made for patients as follows : — Mr J. C. Husband, of Ashurst improved lever and pawl, also invention for stump-extracting and lifting heavy weights ; C. C. Lambert of Ashurst, improved pneumatic cycle saddle. The following significent paragraph is sent to tbe Otago Daily Times by its Wellington correspondent :— The causes that have led up to the discord among the members of the shipping ring, and incidently to tbe recent extraorninary prices for prime " freezers in the South Island are beginning to leak out, and growers and exporters at this end will presently want to know several things. Hawke's Bay is I am told, not iikely to brook the present disparity of local prices as compared with Canterbury and Otago,

In a recent ladies' tournament the hair of one lady came down, bo the umpire allowed her to retire to do it up. She stayed away lhr 20min, thus securing a draw under the rules. Result — a ruling that in all future matches ladies whose hair comes down will just have to play with it down, or default. Mr H. Stewart, of the Wanganui Boys' School, has been appointed to the Feilding School. Mr Stewart, by his courteous unassuming, and genial manner, has made himself very popular here during his few years' residence, and will be greatly missed, particularly in cricket circles, he having occupied the position of the Wanganui C.C. for the last three years. — Herald. The Mayors of some of tbe Boroughs in Otago in tbe good old days were not only remarkable for their courage and honesty of purpose, but for their extreme modesty. As an instance of the latter quality a Mayor of Cromwell was a passenger by steamer from Dunedin to Melbourne. He handed a liberal tip to the steward, and said, with a voice trembling with emotion, " I say, old fellow, I don't say the Mayor of Cromwell is on board — I don't want any excitement." I — — —
