The London and New York Clubs' Contests.
The cable informed us that the result of the meeting between the above Clubs had been the complete triumph of the American athletic team over the Englishmen, and the 'Frisco mail which has just arrived brings full particulars. Results : — 888 Yards— C. Kilpatrick, New York, 1 ; F. Horan, Loudon 2. Time, lmin 53 2-ssec— a world's record. 100 Yards— L. Wefers, New York, 1 ; C. Bradley, London 2 ; J. Crum 3. Time, 9 4-ssec. High Jump— M. Sweeney, New York, had an easy victory, clearing 6ft s|in— a world's record. One Mile Race— T. P. Conneff, New York, 1. Time, 4min 18 l-ssec. G. W. Orton, New York, 2. W. E. Lutyens, Loudon, and Cambridge, also started. 220 Yards— L. Wefers, New York, 1 ; J. Crum, New York, 2 ; G. Jordan, Lonnon, 3 ;A. Downer, London, 4. Downer broke down. Won in 21 3-ssec. Wefers' time is a world's record, the previous best being 21 4-ssec by Lee and Crum, both of America. 120-Yards Hurdles (on cinders)-— S. Chase, New York, 1; Godfrey Shaw, London, 2 ; W. J. Oakley, London, 3. H. Cady, New York, did not finish. Chase knocked down the first hurdle, but he covered the ground between much quicker than Shaw, who was close behind, and after a magnificent struggle just won. Time, 15 3 sth sec This beat the world's record, but was disallowed on account of Chase overturning the hurdle. The next Saturday, however, Chase beat Shaw by five yards in the 120 yds hurdles at the New York Club's sports on the same grounds in 15 3-ssec.,and therefore put up a world's record. Throwing the Hammer— J. S. Mitchell (champion), New York, won at 137 ft s_i n. Putting the Weight — G. R. Gray (champion), New York, won with 43ft sin. 440 Yards— T. Burke, New York, 1 ; G. Jordan, London, 2; G. Sands, New York, 3 ; W. Fitzherbert, London, 4. Time, 49sec. The Long Jump was won by E. Bloss, of New York, who cleared 22ft 6in ; Sheldon, New York, 2 ; Oakley, London, 3 ; Mendleson, London, 4. Three Miles— T. Conneff, New York, 1 ; Wilkins, London, 2; Kilpatrick, New York, and Horan, Londou, retired.
