Mr Gladstone on Biblical Study.
• ♦ ■ The Daily Chronicle says : — The ! general introduction which Mr Gladstone has written to the forthcoming " People's • Bible History " is quite a long article. It runs to 22 pages, and was finished at Hawarden towards the end of last year. ! The general line underlying Mr Glad- ( stone's contribution is a setting forth of i tbe value of Scriptural studies to the [ laity. At the outset he discusses the power of Christianity, toucbes upon the circulation of the Scriptures, and contrasts them with other sacred writings. Somewhat further on he writes of the Christian and pagan creeds as seen side by side, of the racial history of the Orient, and of the imperfections of the sacred books of tbe East. His next point is the Mosaic chronology, and then comes an examination of the story of Genesis, and after that the subject of the origin of man is noticed. A defence of the Bible is followed byan analysis , of the character of the assaults made upon it. Towards the close Mr Gladstone alludes to the temptations and trials of public life, and he sums up the Scriptures in a triumphal note as the solace of mankind.
