_ .*. (Per Press Association). Christchurch, Novr. 15. MarmadukeDixon, a very old Canterbury settler, died early this morning ; aged 67. Christchurch, Novr. 15. A slight trouble arose at Lyttelton yesterday in consequence of a contractor for the painting of a dredge having employed men to do the work of painting at 9s per day. As far as could be learned it was not exactly let by tender, bnt given at a stated rate of wages per day for labour. The matter was represented by the officials of the Wharf Labourers Union to Mr D. J. Joyce, Chairman of the Harbour Board, who took action, with the result that the work is to be done by members of the Association at the ruling rate of wages of the port, namely 10s per day. \n old man named Owen Williams, committed to Lyttelton gaol on November 11th for vagrancy, committed suicide in his cell this morning by hanging himself with a strap to an iron bar three feet from the ground to which bis hammock was hung. Auckland, Nov. 15. Alfred Wrigley Ellis has been committed for trial on a charge of forgery. Napier, Nov. 15. The Baptist Conference was brought to a conclusion to-night. Weuwgtos. Nov. 15. To-night's Gazette contains regulations providing that all cash deposited with the Public Trustee under " The Foreign Insurance Companies Deposits Act 1894 " after tbe Ist of December next shall bear 3 per cent. The appointments of A. A. K. Duncan as Deputy Public Trustee, and Henry Kember as a member of the General Board of Government Advances to Settlers office are gazetted. This Day. Heavy rain set in from the south this morning necessitating the postponement of the Amateur Athletic Club's Sports. Tbe hearing of the abortion charge was concluded this morning and Mr and Mrs Brown being committed tor trial.
