Village Settlement Scheme in South Australia.

The report of the Select Committee which was appointed to enquire into the ViJlage Settlements scheme shows the expenditure oontempkted under the Act, viz, L 15,000, has been exceeded by L 25--,-000. The average cash advances to settlers was L 59 per head, and the average total indebtedness LBS per head. Only one village was started where the residents possessed any considerable means The total number of villagers, notwithstanding the reinforcement, decreased during the year by 150. The cost of living and clothing, including that ol women and children, varied from 6s to 7a per week. The number of acres now under cultivation is 3,276, of which 2,400 are planted in cereals. The Inspector advised that the cereal industry should not be relied on. Only two settlements might possibly manage without Government assistance, while it would be impossible for some to succeed even with further Government assistance under the present conditions.
