The Feilding Star. Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. FRIDAY. NOVEMBER 15, 1895. CANCER.
«. — _ In our last issue we made some com- , ment on tbe increase of cancer in this 1 colony, and since then we have learned that within the last ten years the number of deaths t>er annum have increased from 177 to 408, the latter number being reached last year. That means the deaths i'rotn this fell disease for every ten thousand of tbe population have risen from 2 69 in 1881 to 502 in 1893. I 16 is held by some experts that the germs of both cancer and tuberculosis are often distributed by infected meat and by in- ' fected milk. There is no unanimity of opinion, however, among medical practitions on the point. One section does not believe cancer can be communicated, bat they are in a minority — which is becoming smaller every day ; while . another section, which includes nearly the whole of the Continental and a large per centage of English bacteriologists, believe that it is contagions. The latter - believe caucer is due to a bacillus, while the former held the opinion it is a cell development. As to tuberculosis, there r is no donbt whatever of the infection being conveyed in the way already described. __________,_,.„»«,
