He agreed that it was desirable to show America that Brit- j ish competition was probable. Mr Chamberlain, replying to the Im- j perial Defence Committee, said he was considering the suggestion that the col- ' onies should contribute to the navy. The King of Asbantee refused to yield ' and is purchasing or compelling aliances with the surrounding states. A draft of white troops will accompany Scott's punitive expedition, which sails immediately. The total force amounts to 1400 men. Arrived—Himalaya, barque, from Lyttie ton, June 30. Earnock, ship, from Lyttleton, July 29. At a meeting of Messrs Dalgetty and Co., Mr Edmund T. Doxat, chairman and managing director, said the low prices ruling for wool and stock last year had caused a shrinkage. The securities had been written down by ±'102,000. He held out strong hopes of improvement in business, and thought the shrinkage bad been arrested. Shanghai, November 13.
