The Feilding Star, Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 1895. THE HOLIDAY BUNGLE.

«. Now that the holiday season has practically commenced it is to be hoped that there will be no more blunders similar to that of the day observed as the holiday in honor of the Prince of Wales Birthday. The whole of the public offices and business places were open on Saturday while the Banks were closed ; and on Monday the position was reversed for the Banks were open and the public offices and business places were closed. So far the Banks were within their rights because the notice of their intention were posted in the windows of their several premises for four or five days so that the townspeople, at least, could not plead ignorance on that score. (Inter alia it has already been pointed out that conveying knowledge of this character to settlers in the country districts by advertisement is deemed a work of supererogation by the Banks). As soon as the officer in charge of the post and telegraph offices was advised thai the places of business would not be closed on Saturday, he communicated the fact to the head of the department, arid the change was duly authorised, and much public inconvenience thereby averted. There is a general opinion that the Borough Council should have acted some time before they did, md not have waited for the energetic Secretary of a Palmerston North Sports Committee to prompt them. In order to prevent this sort of thing happening again we would suggest that the old Holiday Association be called into existence once more. During its too brief life much good was done, and as the number of employes in the Borough has considerably increased, if it were reformed its influence would be more extended.
