Mr Chamberlain on the Colonies.
(Per Press Association.) London, Nov. 12. At a farewell banquet to Colonel Gerard Smith, Governor of Western Australia, Mr Chamberlain, Secretary for the Colonies, expressed regret at the recent reduction of the Governor's salary by some ot the Colonies, but thought they would have no difficulty in finding patriotic men willing to accept the position even at the reduced rate. Population and Freetrade would bring Western Australia prosperity He was satisfied with the broad-minded action of New South Wales, and hoped the Australian Colonies would bury petty jealousies and ambitions and found a Commonwealth whicb, he foresaw, would be destined to outstrip the waning greatness of older Europe in the time that was historically visibie.
