THE GOLF GROUND.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAR. Sir,—l accept Mr Coote's letter, dated 7th instant, with pleasure, but in reply to " Quietness is ac Best," I submit to your readers whether the terms " abusive and impertinent" are not more applicable to the language of one who uses them without provocation than to the contents of my letter complained of. Let me add that the style of " Quietness is ac Best's " letter is too characteristic to avoid the identification of the author, whatever norn de plume he may for the time being assame, and as a constant reader of your columns he ought not to be so blind to so patent a fact. This information may not be without its use to him. I am, etc., Ormond Cooper. SOCIAL PURITY. TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAR. Sir,—Along with Mr J. H. Stevens, allow me to express my great pleasure at the conference called by Bishop Wallis to consider this important subject. There can be no difference of opinion upon the necessity for such an institution, nor on its great utility if once fairly started. The Bishops, clergy, and official laymen of the Church of England, as representing by far the most numerous part of the community are the right people to initiate snch a movement. Their responsibility and success may be seen in representative position. May I ask should the selfish interest of our "daily toil" be sufficient excuse for keeping aloof from a good work that must claim tne attention of everyone who can beast of a spark of love for his kind. Following up Mr Stevens' hint to the five clergymen, or religious leaders, of the town, I would ask that a representative committee invite the said ministers, and others of both sexes who are interested in the matter, to meet and consider what can be done. Possibly there will be various opinions about details, but if the give-and-take spirit of liberality prevail, something very beneficial to the young people of Feilding may eventuate. I am, etc., Anothek Stroke of a Non-Churchman.
