— — o The Manchester Rifles mustered in the Volunteer Hall last night for instruction by Lieut-Col. Newall. Capt. Eirton, Lieuts. Bray and Barltrop and thirty-six non-commissioned officers and men were present. After the usual inspection, Lieut. Barltrop drilled the company in various movements, and was followed by Lieut. Bray. Col-Sergt. Milson instructed in physical drill, and Sergt. Parker in firing exercises. A.t tbe conclusion of the parade the District order appointing Lieut. Barltrop to the Manchester Rifles was read, and Lieut-Col. Newall said he was glad to have so valuable and thoroughly efficient an officer under his command, and congratulated the corps on the fact of Lieut. Barltrop having placed his services at their disposal. He further said that he had recommended that the various companies on the West Coast be formed into a battalion, and he had every reason to believe his suggestion would be adopted by the Defence Department. To suit the convenience of the corps the volley firing would not be held until January, but in the meantime tbe men should get through their class firing before that, in order to improve their shooting tor the money prize. The parade was then dismissed.
