A Shocking Tragedy.

o (Per Press Association.) Sydney, November 6. A sad tragedy was reported at North Sydney this morning. The family of William Smith, an Imperial pensioner, were aroused by the screams of the mother, and on proceeding to her bedroom it was found the father had cut his wife's and his own throat. The unfortunate woman received an ugly wound, which probably may not prove fatal, but Smith's windpipe was severed and he is in a dangerous condition. Smith was until recently a warrant officer of the local forces, but was retrenched, and want of work and financial embarrassment induced melancholia. He had written a letter in which be said he was tired of ttoe struggle and intimated his intention of killing himself, wife, and family of six children.
