THE V.R.C. MEETING.

WALLACE WINS THE DERBY. (Per Press Association). Melbourne, Nov. '2. There was glorious weather for the opeuing campaign of the V.R.C. Spring Meeting. There was a very large attendance, there being several thousand more than on last Derby Day. The following are the results of the V.R.C. Meeting :— • Trial Stakes— Action 1, Cabin Boy 2, Monard 3. Won easily by two lengths. Time, lmin 44sec. Melbourne Stakes, 1} miles — Hova 1, Music 2, Hopscotch 3. Won by two lengths. Time, 2mih 9f sec. Hotham Handicap, U miles— The Trier 1, Toreador 2, Mostyn 3. Won by a neck. Time, 2min 38sec. V.R.C. Derby, 1£ milas— Wallace, by Carbine— Melodious 1, Osculator 2, Auraria 3. Other starters— Te Whiti, Onward, Lead On, Creine DOr and Waterfall. Betting— s to 4on Wallace, 7 to 2 Waterfall, 9 to 2 Auraria, 12 to 1 Osculator. Wallace was a little fractious at the post, but eventually the field were despatched on even terms. Onward was the first to show up prominently, but in the straight Lead On dashed out and soon had a lead of a dozen lengths from the son of Gang Forward. Tlien came Te Whiti with Auraria and Wallace at his heels and Waterfall last. Osculator was the first horse to come into prominence as the field swept round the home turn, and the New Zealand colt had a slight advantage of Wallace aa tbey turned into the straight with Aararia and Waterfall close up, the latter being in the centre of the course. Wallace took command at the distance post, but a hundred yards further on Osculator headed him amidst frantic yellß that the favorite was beaten, but the latter coming again fought every inch of the ground, and forcing past Oscnlator, who struggled on moat gamely, managed to squeeze home by a head, Aararia two lengths away, Te Whiti a length and a half behind the latter, was fourth, Waterfall being last. Time, 2m in 46sec. (?). Moribyrnong Plate, 5 furlongs—Newhaven 1, Coil 2, Kobold 3. Won easily by two lengths. Time, lmin 2£sec. Opinions differ as to Wallace's Derby victory, though of course the win was extremely popular ; still, Osculator bat tied so stoutly, and came time and again when apparently beaten, that experts consider, both fit and well, the half brother to Crackshot is Wallace's master. His feet have been giving his trainer a lot of trouble, but if he his not knocked out by his exertions this afternoon, the struggle between the two colts on Tuesday promises to be worth a long pilgrimmage to witness. Wallace finishec|[gamely enough, but the false pace maintained by the field for a third of the distance suited his phenomenal pace admirably. A number of Press men in an excellent position of judging consider that Osculator finished in front of Wallace in the Derby. Wallace is engaged in the Melbourne Cup, and as his impost (7at 61b) is equal to weight for age scale, he will not carry any more, according to the conditions of the race. Betting was dull is the Victorian rooms last night, 7 to 1 was offered against Hova, about whom, on the first flush of bis Melbourne Stakes victory, 4 to 1 was the best offer in the paddock at Flemington. Bto 1 Wallace, 100 to 6 Quiver and Music, 100 to 4 Osculator, Lord Richmond, and Trenchant, 100 to 3 The Trier and Toreador. Wallace and Osculator look none the worse for yesterday's go. Miller, the trainer of Osculator, fancies no light weight jockey can do the colt justice in a two mile race, but is confident Osculator could beat Wallace in a single-handed contest at Derby weights.
