« There are nearly 3500 liquor licenses held m New South Wales. Japan will shortly hold a World's Fair, and it will be on a great scale. There are about 700 golf clubs at present in great Britain, with about 35,000 players. For every hour that Parliament is in session it is estimated. that the cost is £73. Receivers of land revenue will be instructed to receive marked cheques in future. The New Zealand Royal readers are to be used in Standards V., VI., and VII., in all public schools. N The Premier intends visiting Christ* church during Carnival week and the Colonial Treasurer g§es South on Monday.
The Pohangina County Council will meet on Saturday next. The Marton loan proposals were carried yesterday by a large majority. Mr C. Carr will hold a sale of furniture on behalf of Mr E. Mills on Monday. The Rev W. H. Judkins will preach in the Wesleyaii Church to-niorrow morning and evening. Mr H. D. Bell, M.H.R. for Wellington, returned from Auckland last night. He leaves on a trip home about the end of this month. It is the intention of the Government to give trotting clubs equal fair play in the matter of totalisator permits with racing clubs. An extraordinary general meeting of the Feilding Football Club will be held on the evening of Wednesday, the 6th instant, at the Manchester Hotel, at 7.30 p.m. The Rev J. Cocker advertises his subject for to-morrow morning and evening. A free seat, and a hearty welcome will be offered to those attending the church. Tenders are invited by the Manawatu Timber Company, Feilding, for cutting and delivering timber at the Manchester Mill, Birmingham. Tenders close on the 12th instant. Tenders are invited by the Town Clerk, Mr G. C. Hill, for "forming and culverting 26h chains of Weld and Bowen streets. Plans, etc., may be seen at the Borough office. The Premier considers that the Mount Cook prison site would not suit for a site for the Houses of Parliament. Moreover, it is about the last place to which any M.H.R., would care to go. The following are the vital statistics for the district of Palmerston North for month ending 31st October :— Births, 31 ; deaths, 10; marriages 5. Four of the deaths occurred in the hospital. A special general meeting of the Feilding Cycling Club will be held at Hastie's Hotel on Monday next at 8 p.m. Among other business the report of the programme committee will be submitted. The Bachelors' Ball held last evening in the Birmingham Town Hall was a great success. The Hall could scarcely hold the number attending. Mr Scnmegour acted as M.C., and carried out his duties well. Mr Pirani divided the House on Thursday on the Premier's motion to adjourn tili next day in order to record in Hansard the name of those members who bad remained at their posts till the close of the business. The motion was carried by 20 to 9. We have to thank Messrs Hayne and Lloyd, the agents for the colony, for a copy of Messrs John Hadden and Co.'s " All about Colonial produce and its value in the London market." This is a most valuable publication. The entries for the Canterbury Metropolition A. and P. Show are as follows — Sheep, 538, cattle, 174 ; horses, 218 ; dairy produce. &c, 136; dogs, 22; pigs, 32. Total, 1120. It will be noticed that implements are not enumerated. Mr Milson has decided to hold a great clearing sale of damaged goods, when a splendid opportunity will be given to obtain dolls, toys, cards, etc., at the most surprisingly cheap rates. An advertisement eiving particulars will appear early next week. The following team has been selected for the Cup cricket match, Pohangina v. Colyton, to be played in the Pohangina township on Saturday, 6th November : — S. Roberts, G. Adsett, A. Wagstaff, J. Browne, F. Roberts, H. Roberts, H. Grieve W. Bolton, T. Rimmer and E. Pierard. Emergencies : J. Roberts, T. Taylor and W. Roberts. A defendant who pleaded the Statute of Limitations as an answer to a tailor's account was much disappointed this morning on finding that he had written an acknowledgement of the debt on the back of one of the plaintiff's accounts, and returned it to the plaintiff, about three years ago. Judgment was accordingly entered up against him for £7 15s, and costs 46s. — Post. The Council of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society has decided to recommend the Colonial Secretary to amend the Fisheries' Regulations, so as to allow the use of the worm in trout fishing when used on a rod and running line attached to a reel. This will bring the regulations of the Wellington Society into conformity with those of the South Island Societies.— Post. A tough fishing story comes from England. A lawyer was fishing for trout from a boat, when he lost his gold watch overboard. A year after he was fishing at the same spot, when he caught an 81b trout, and in its throat he found a gold watch, still going, and showing correct time. The theory to account for its going is that it is a stem winder and that in masticating its food, the fish turned the stem and kept it wound up. In another column will be found a business notice from Mr D. Jones, engineer and blacksmith, who has removed to premises adjoining Mr Stratford's coach factory. Mr Jones, in addition to shoeing, is prepared to undertake orders for construction or repair of implements. He makes a specialty of his windmills, one of which he has fitted up for |Mr Stevens, and another being in course of construction on the bowling green. The local Lodge of Oddfellows M.U. held their usual fortnightly meeting in the Foresters' Hall last evening, but owing to the evening being wet only a fair number of members attended. The ordinary business was gone through when the Lodge went into harmony, Bro. H. Bastings favoring the members with a song, which was well received, The Lodge will hold a church parade on Sunday morning to the Wesleyan Church. All members are reminded that the parade will leave the Foresters' Hall at 10.30, the Feilding band will attend and will play four selections during the parade. Messrs Wollerman and Co., of Palmerston North, wine, spirit, and general merchants, notify that they have largely augmented their stock by consignment of the very best brands of all the most popular establishments in England, or on the Continent. They have also on hand that most excellent summer beverage, the popular Lager beer, specially selected by Mr Wollercnan during his recent visit to Europe. The firm have also on view pianos, and other musical instruments, farming machinery and implements indented direct from the manufacturers, so that the public practically escape the middleman's profit and benefit accordingly. The firm are cash buyers of grain and produce. The Committee of the Feilding Athletic Club met in Mr Sherwill's office last evening. Present — Messrs Gosling (chairman), Sherwill, Worsfold, Haybittle, Thompson, G. Lethbridge,, Say well, Fisher, Woolven, Scott and Allan. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Correspondence was received and dealt with from various sources. On the recommendation of the local Cycling Club, Messrs A. H. Way (F.C.C.) and. E. Essex (M.C.C.) were appointed handicappers for the cycling events at the forthcoming spotts. Messrs Sherwill and Bailey were appointed to select the ladies' bracelet. Messrs Allan, Fisher, Saywell, G. Lethbridge and Sherwill were appointed a ground committee. The tiqual vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the meeting'
