A Lesson for the Electors.

THE CHAMPION TALKERS. Certain members have on different occasions this session accused the Government of gagging the House with the timelimit system. Yesterday Mr G. "W. Russell, was harping on this same old string when the Premier neatly turned the tables on that gentleman by quoting the record holders in respect to length of speech in Hansard up to 2nd October in present session of Parliament. The order was as follows : — Sir Robert Stout spoke 160 times, making 1316 inches in Hansard ; Captain Russell, 207 times, 1189 inches ; Mr Hogg, 84 times, 804 inches ; Mr G. W. Russell, 171 times, 918 inches ; Mr T. McKenzie, 170 times, 843 inches ; Mr J. Duthie, 144 times, 784 inches ; Mr J. Allen, 171 times, 712 inches ; Dr Newman, 132 times, 660 inches ; Mr Earnshaw, 188 times, 618 inches; Mr E. M. Smith, 77 times, 600 inches ; Major Steward, 90 times, 563 inches. The Premier read out these figures amidst a running fire of comment, cries of " What about yonr own record V" predominating. Mr Seddon retorted that if he equalled Sir Robert Stout's record he would do very well. He had carefully refrained, however, from giving the number of inches of Hansard taken by members of the Government. He did not wish to take away the occupation of members of the Opposition. During the recess they could occupy the time in reckoning the matter up.-Times.
