«. It would appear that the jubilation which was indulged in by the people on this coast a few months ago because a rumour was circulated to the effect that the Government intended to take over the Wellington-Manawatu railway line, ! was rather premature. No mention whatever of this intention was made in the Public Works Statement, and the project is again hung up for an indefinite period. We can quite understand that cbe real reason is the want of money and the fear of the Government that if they made any proposal to raise a loan for the purpose, the House in the present temper of members would certainly reject it. Our contemporary the Manawatu Times in this connection points out that the time for the completion of the line between Wellington and Woodville has been fixed so that in June 1897 there will be an alternative route to that via Palmerston from Hawke's Bay to Wellington. " Whether . that fact is being kept in view by the Government, with the idea that the completion of the Wairarapa line will have an effect in the negotiations for the purchase of the Manawatu railway, is a matter for speculation. What is known is that the present dual control causes a heavy tax on many settlers, and should be removed." It is roughly estimated that by the Government acquiring the line in question, the residents between New Plymouth and Longburn would be saved .£IO,OOO a year at the least, and not a soul be a penny the poorer.
