The Feilding Star, Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 26, 1895. THE BANK AMALGAMATION.

— , «. The question of the absorption of the - Colonial Bank by the Bank of New Zealand naay now be considered as practically ended. It will be seen on reference r to our Parliamentary report published in another column, that Mr Seddon's amendment to Mr Bell's motion was carried by a bare majority, but in exr plaoation of this the Hon. Mr McKenzie said there had been already two catch divisions on the question and he thought - it only right the country should know that if all those members who supported the ratification agreement had beejj jn their places, the divisions would have t shown large* majorities in its favor. 1 Oaptain Russell gave a quiet rebuke to r those who had opposed the measure 1 when he said he supported the amalgaa mation because he preferred to take the opinion of the President and Directors of the Bank of New Zealand to that of - any member of the House. Whatever oversights may have been made, or technical errors allowed to appear in tiie original agreement will, be adjusted aud ESBWJved by the Amendment Bill which b&s been introduced to the House ' and read a first time. We consider it a matter for congratuiat&n tp the. whole j jtfiooy that this much ye^ed fivtiwa

has at length been brought within measurable distance of absolute settlement. There is much work of detail yet to be done, but -we feel assured that it will be completed satisfactorily, without undue haste, and with ample justice to all who are directly or indirectly concerned either as clients or employes of the Colonial Bank. It is notorious that the state of suspense business men have been kept in for the period during which the subject of amalgamation has been an open question, has interfered with commercial transactions very considerably, and done much to retard that business activity which promised to result from the advances in the prices of the various classes of wool produced in the colony. Now that the cause of this evil has been removed we hope to see the dawn of a brighter day, when entire confidence will obtain on all sides, and the spirit of enterprise be permitted to cjrM>inrf int.n npw n.nrl vionrnns liffi.
