The Feilding Star, Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 23, 1895. THE BANK AMALGAMATION.
o Although objection may be taken to the manner of Mr Beli's attack on the terms of the contract for the purchase of the Colonial Bank by the Bank of New Zealand, yet, looking at the act impartially and without prejudice, we Venture to express the opinion that only good will be the outcome of the consequent debate. The subject is one of such vast interest tG the colony, involving as it does questions of great gravity as affecting the future commercial stability of what may now be looked upon as the State Bank — in fact, although not in name, that the more free and open the discussion, aud the more the electors are taken into the confidence of the Ministry, the better in the end will be the result. We do not mean to imply for one moment that tho private affairs of either companies or individuals, or their relationships with the banks, should be either divulged or debated in the House, but members should be satisfied that in voting for or against the purchase they are doing that which is honorable and right, and absolutely free from party bias. Of the latter, so far as we at present can judge, we cannot acquit Mr Bell, who would appear to care irao&e for embarrassing the Ministry than for conserving the credit of the Colonial Bank. We have read the conditions of the content with some degree of care, and they appear fc> us to have been drawn up in a business-like way by business men who thoroughly understood what they were about, and at the same ticj<e recognised what a great sacrifice the 6fc#r.ebolders of the selling Bank were to b& asked to make. Although it has been sttfed that they will only receive thirteen sbilliags per share, y.et it is expected when the whole M the outstanding assets in the shape of ad. vanees have been realised, further payments will be made increasing that -amount to thirty.?? thirty-five shillings. Be that as it may, <«perts tlu'nk the Bank of New Zealand has %? best of the bargain. The debate, whfck will begin on Wednesday next, will be watched with great attention by not only the elector's in this colony, bnt by the ' ' money pjen" in Loq4op , who are, petlaaps, even more intexested fchan the taxpayers M New Zealand wso><may | have to "pay tlm piper " in the near future, What a uumber of people dre^d
— and it is surprising how openly they express their fears —is that future " Banking Legislation " will he necessary, unless the greatest care and forethought are now exercised by Parliament. _ ____ ____-»
