» (Per Press Association.) Gisborne, October 21. For some months the Harbor Board has been dredging the river channel, and as the result of its operations the s.s. Australia (559 tons), drawing 9ft 9in of water, was brought up the channel last evening and berthed at Bead's quay. This is the first time a steamer of such size has been in the Turanganui river. Dunedin, October 22. Joe Mcc, a Chinaman, was found dead to-day in a bouse in Walker- street. He was apparently well yesterday. Three of the forfeited sections in the Pomahaka estate were open for application to-day but no offer was received. Featherston, October 22. The new cheese factory of the Featherston dairy Company was formally opened to-day by Mr Buchanan, M.H.R. There was a sumptuous lunch given by the directors in the factory, to which over 200 persons sat down. Everything is working satisfactorily, and it is hoped that it will be a success. Wellington, October 32. The body of a fully developed newly born female phild was found on the beap^ at Oriental Bay. When f be steamer Manaia wag eross j n g the Patea bar yesterday afternoon in the face of a heavy sea the foremast rigging band suddenly snapped in two, bringing the whole of the rigging and gear to the deck. Fortunately no one was hurt. Messrs Leary and Co. offered to-day a catalogue comprising about 2000 ekins, which were all cleared at satisfactory prices. The attendance was good and comoetition keen. Butchers skins realised up to 5s 6d ; country crossbreds, well saved, sgd to 53d ; medium to good 4f d to s£d ; country merino skins, well saved, 5d to s£d ; medinm to good 4£d to 4-£ d ; ■dead hoggets, 4d to 4sd per lb. Invkrcaroill, Oct. 25. General Booth addressed a large meeting this morning and left for the Bluff by train in time to catch the Mararoa bound for Melbourne. Auckland, Oct, 21. A large steamer passed Cape Brett at noon, which is probably Shaw, Saville 'and Albion Co.'s cargo steamer Pakeha, Bowflue from London.
