♦ (Per Press Association.) Auckland, Oct. 18. The storehouse of W. J. Beale, sewing machine importer, Shortland street, was found on fire at 6 a.m. The roof of the building was burned and the side charred. A large quantity oi the machines, which were damaged were insured in the Sun office for £700. The building is owned by Mr Sutherland, at present in Scotland, and the building: is insured in the New Zealand for LIOO. Wellington, October 18. Edward Barber, butcher, has filed a statement of his assets and liabilities. The unsecured creditors' debts amount to L 1073, secured creditors L 21.904, the value secured being L 21.553, leaving a deficit of L 350. There is a liability under bond to the National Bank of LfiOOi making a total of L 1.014 8s lid. The assets are valued at LI, 115 9s 2i; end consist of stock in trade L 220, book debts L 995 9s 2d (estimated to produce L 835 9s Id), furniture L4O and shares in Langstone Co. L2O. At a large meeting of the New Zealand Alliance Executive this evening the following resolution was unanimously passed :—" That in the opinion of the Executive of the New Zealand Alliance, the action of the Legislative Council in respect to the Alcoholic Liquors Sales Control Amendment Act has shown utterly unreasonable and unjustifiable disregard of public opinion." Dunedin, October 18. General Booth addressed a public meetiDg to-night in the Garrison Hall, which was crowded. In the course of his address he said he could not understand the statement alleged to have been made by Lord Brassey, that he had asked him for land because it was not correct.
