•■ (Per Press Association.) Auckland, October 17. A quantity of stuff for crushing at the Nil Desperandnm mine was found to be tampered with and a portion stolen. There is do clue to the perpetrators. It is supposed the tampering was done while the quartz was lying on Ohui beach. The ship Kathdown, which put into port in distress through her cargo shifting in a gale, will have to have her cargo restowed, and the damage to the boats, bulwarks and sails repaired. Napiee, Oct. 17.. At the inquest of Edmund Black, secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, who was found dead in a stable with a bottle of prussic acid besido him, a verdict was returned that he died from poison selfadministered, and that no one was to blame. A sharp shock of earthquake was experienced here at 6.20 a.m. to-day. Hokitika, Oct. 17. Hugh Owens, a well-known miner, was carried down the tail-race at the back of the creek this afternoon, and died within 15 minutes of being taken out. He leaves a wife and several small children. Christchurch, This Day. Bernard Simpson, a well-known tobacconist, fell dead last night. Heart disease. The Canterbury A. and P. Association have decided to -accept the entries of prize-takers at country shows at half the usual rates. Gisborne, Oct. 17. A sharp shock of earthquake was felt at 1.16 o'clock this morning. The direction was from ea3t to west.
