The Dean Case.
DEAN TO BE DEFENDED. HE WITHDRAWS HIS CONFESSION. (Per Press Association). Sydney, October 17. The four defendants in the Dean case were remanded for a week. Dean asked to be allowed to speak to Mr Levien, solicitor, and told him he wished to withdraw all acknowledgement of his guilt and asks Mr Levien to defend him. The latter replied that it was impossible under the present circumstances, and Dean asks him to nominate someone who would. At Dean's request the police communicated with his friends, with the result that Garrick and Close, solicitors, were engaged for the defence. 4fter interviewing the prisoner, Garrick stated he had come to the conclusion that owing to worry and excitement Dean was in such an extraordinary state of mind lately that it was his duty to withdraw tho plea of guilty to a charge of perjury. _____
