The Frozen Meat Trade.

Tho report of the Colonial Consignment *ml Distributing Company, of London dated August 23rd. which came to hand by the Brindisi mail, records the fact that the whole of the imports of froten meat from New Zealand only amounted to a few carcases of sheep. Of the meat from this colony the report sneaks as follows :— Mutton -Shortened stocks and expected light shipments in the near future have had their effect, and ©rices have gone higher than seemed likely a fortnight ago ; the end of last week saw rates firm at 3jd per lb for sheep, and it has been found possible this week to make a further tfeeTand 3d 18-16ths per lb has ruled sinee 0 Monday ; Canterburys have made about id per lb more. Trade has not been at all hrisk, and probably rather fewer numbers have been sold, but each day there has been an early clearance and a better .tone has prevailed. Lamb - there has been no recovery from the weakness noted in our last, and demand remains very slack. The absence of so many f amihes from town probably partly accounts for the lack of bnsiness, and the low price of the great numbers of poor, inferior Scotch lambs, coming on the market - earlier this year than usual, are a tempt_ atdon to buyers, and lessen the sales pf the New Zealanders, far superior as the . last are in condition and quality. The best lambs can hardly be quoted above 4M per lb. An occasional sale may be ' made at id per lb more money, but the numbers are too few to be quotable. Second-class lambs make from 3£d to 4d '■'■ per lb, but the trade lacks animation. Beef— The Tekoa* brought 645 forequarters, the Star of England 200 fore and 201 hindquarters, the last specially good ripe meat from Napier and the East Coast.
