THE NEW FIRE INSURANCE TARIFF. . «■ Many insurers hoped that they would have a reduction made in their rates as an outceme of the recent conference of representatives of Fire Insurance Companies at Melbourne, but it would apj pear they are doomed to disappointment. We are informed by a local journal that in Palmerston a considerable increase has been made, notwithstanding the splendid supply of water available, and the same thing is reported from Woodville. The Manawatu Times says: — Speaking generally, it would appear that a policy of further spoliation of New Zealand insurers is to be carried on, and under these circumstances the sooner tbe State undertakes the work of fire insurance, the better. A public meeting was held recently in New Plymouth to protest against the new tariff (the tariff has been raised 83 per cent, on the old one), and a resolution was passed to the effect —That those present viewed with indignation the iniquitous attempt on the part of insurance companies to increase the already excessive rate ot insurance charged in Taranaki. It was also decided to urge on tbe Government tbe advisableness of starting a State Insurance Department, or, failing that, to take steps to establish a Colonial Co-onerative Insurance Company.
