Volunteer Items.
The Manchester Rifles were inspected last night by Lieut.-Col. Newall. Forty men of all ranks Were present. Captain Kir ton put the corps, through some com* " pany movements and Color-Sergt. Mil. son, Sergts. Parker and Boyd followed with company, manual, and firing eier? cises, respectively. Color-Sergt. Milson then instructed the men in physical drill. At the conclusion' of the parade Colonel Newall complimented the corps on their steadiness and the marked improvement observable In their performance of the manual exercises, and rightly attributed it to the company parades which are now regularly held. He congratulated Color-Sergt. Milson on his proficiency in the physical drill, and " ' recommended the other non-commis-sioned officers to follow his good example. ' Lieut. Barlthrop, of 4&e Nelson Navals, was elected as lieutenant > in the place of Mr J. W. F. Halcombe, resigned. The corps has gained in Mr Barlthrop the services of a most useful officer, who brings with him a very high reputation as anenthusiastic volunteer.
