ANONYMOUS WRITING.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAB. Sib, — With reference to the several letters of Mr S. Goodbehere and "Colonist," the first named says " anonymous letters cannot be of the slightest use." Now, I don't hold that view. We see .. these letters all over the colony. Mr Goodbehere should remember few of us are independent, and, alas! few of us can sit on money bags. In business, where a poor man has to please so many parties and sects it is not always convenient for a man to pnt bis name to .. his letters, and the press is the only means through which persons so situated can make an impression on the minds of the people. It is very easy to ' say " Gall meetings," advocate Freetrade principles, and vote at the next election only for Freetrade and freedom. lam & Freetrader myself, and if had my own way I would sack the whole Custombouse — pick and shovel — so that everything should be free. People want their beer and whisky (despite the few Prohibitionist agitators, who, if they knew who I was, would be " on my neck " and refuse to buy my fish)— but never mind. I would have the breweries and the distilleries, and so keep the money in the country to give employment to thousands of people. The .distilleries would pay their tax, and every man an i ncome tax. I would have no exemption. I, for my part, have not earned £1 per week this year, as my books can show, but I would sooner pay £1 direct tax than £4, £5, or £6, in Customhouse duty. I am, etc., FISHMONOEB.
