LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.
(Per Press Association.) Wellington, October 8. The Council met at 2.30. Hoa Mr Bigg moved that in the opinion of the Council the Chinese are undesirable immigrants. In the* course of hia speech on the motion the hon. gentleman proceeded to read the evidence taken before the Public Petitions Committee on the Chinese question, when Mr Reynolds suggested that the galleries be cleared, as it was patent that Mr Bigg, by a side wind, was endeavouring to get the evidence, taken before the committee, placed in Hansard. The galleries were cleared and at fonr o'clock the debate upon the motion not being concluded lapsed, and the galleries were re-opened and business on the order paper proceeded with. The Unclassified Societies Registration Bill and the Margarine Bill were put through the final stages. j The Chattels Transfer Act Amendment Bill passed through committee. The consideration of the Alcoholic Liquors Bill in committee was deferred till next day. In committee on the Sea Fisheries' Act Amendment Bill a new clause was inserted allowing a search for illegally caught fish. A motion by the Hon Mr Rigg, that the Council should adjourn till 7. 30 tomorrow on account of the Labor Day demonstration, was lost by 17 to 6. At 5 p.m. the Council adjourned till 2.80 p.m. to-morrow.
