♦ (Per Press Association.) Christchurch, September 30. All the local bands and the Wellington Garrison Band left by the express train to-day for Timaru, to attend the band contest. The Supreme Court civil sittings were resumed to-day, when the case of Bayer v. Hornsby (proprietor of the San news* paper) for libel, in which damages was claimed, was heard before Judge Dennison alone. His Honour gave judgment for plaintiff for £10, with costs. Wanganui, Sept. 30. At the Supreme Court to-day John Donovan was acquitted on the charge of breaking and entering a dwelling with intent to do grievous bodily harm to one of the inmates. Wellington, Sepi. 30. The annual meeting of the shareholders of the New Zealand Shipping Company will be held in London on Cctober 9. After fally providing for depreciation the directors recommend payment of a dividend at the rate of four per cent per annum. Auckland, Sept. 80. Mrs Burridge, a steerage passenger on board the Tarawera from Lyttelton for Auckland, was found dead in her berth shortly after the steamer left Gisborne. The cause of death is supposed to be heart disease. The schooner Christina is still on the Bangttoto Beef. It is believed she will be a total wreck. Dunedin, Sept. 80.
