The Flax Trade.
Speaking at a meetiug in Foxton on Friday night, Mr T. P. Williams said the number of hands employed in the year 1890 were 2109 men and 1029 hoys, and the total number of hands employed was 'JIUS ; the amount ot wages paid was 1*110,168, aud bringing into the colouy the sum ot* 12:34, 200 per annum, with au expenditure of only 16000 for machinery, etc. The flax industry has paid away one pound per tou iv wages for every tou of green flax brought to the miller, 'ihe collieries of Now Zealand only employed 1655 bands, and paid in wages 1*173,538 with a value of 1279,777, hut *■, cry little of this was foreign capital. He quoted numerous other industries, but contended that none compared with the flax.
