Land Selection. BALLOT FOR SECTIONS.

(Per Press Association.) Wellington, Sept. 19. At the Land Board to-day there was a large attendance at the ballot for sections. Commissioner Baker said that the large attendance showed what demand there was for land. The applications numbered 400. There was only one application for cash sections, but there were 166 for leases in perpetuity, ai;d 233 for land for occupation with the ri^ht of purchase. This showed that occupation with right of purchase was the favorite system. There were 30 single applications, and those who had put them in would receive their sections. For each of the other sections there was an average of 45 applicants. For one particular section the applicants numbered 79. There were a large number of what he might call family applications, made by each of the members of a family. That might or might not be legitimate. The law allowed the father to put in an application on behalf of the children but tho land must be taken for them. The penalty for making a false declaration was very severe. Any person making such a declaration was liable to a penalty not exceeding £200, or to imprisonment. One of the applications he said was informal, as it was not signed by the person who had sent it in. The form was, however, signed by a Justice of the Peace as having been signed before him, and it would bo his (the Commissioner) duty to call the attention of tbe Minister of Justice to the fact. If it was found that the Justice had signed wilfully he would have a good chance of going off the Bench. Following are the successful applicants : — Awarua Block, section 1, Block V, J. G. Scott.
