The Duty on Boots and Shoes.

♦ (Per Press Association.) Wellington, Sept 18. Messrs R. Hannah, A. Lindsay (Wellington), Harris (Christchurch), and Hodson (Auckland), waited on the Treasurer, as representing the boot manufacturers and importers of the places named. The Treasurer said he was satisfied with the 25 per cent and ad valorem duty carried by the House last night, and would retain it. The deputation expressed satisfaction with the change effected by Mr Mackenzie's motion, although in their opinion 25 per cent would ffive more revenue than the Treasurer's proposals, for which ifc was substituted. Those proposals would have been more cumbrous and confusing, and would have led to fraud upon the Customs.
