The committee reported that after disallowing over two hundred votes rendered informal by the gross negligence of election officials tbe voting resulted in a tie. As ifc is too late for tbe returning officer to record his vote, a new election is rendered necessary. The Customs Bill passed its third reading to-night by 54 to 31. Sailed— Anglian. The Legislative Assembly in committee passed '.he Land Tax and Income Tax Bills without amendment. An attempt to reducelhe Land Tax to a halfpenny was defeated. A Loan Bill providing for the re-pay-ment of a loan passed all stages. On the sth instant and several following daj'S a number of Oregon pine logs came on shore on the south west side of Lord Howe Island slightly covered with barnacles, and have the appearance of having been in the water for about three weeks. One log is marked Oon the end, and another W, in black paint. On May sth last there was picked up on the south west side of the Island a glass globe of the Edison Swan electric light. News from Noumea chronicles severe drought and consequently there is some distress. In New Caledonia there is great scarcity of grass aud the cattle are dying in hundreds. Melbourne, Sept. 18.
